Working in a Toxic Office Environment? Here's What You Can Do

I’ve been hearing from plenty of you about what it is like to work in a toxic work environment. Between increased workloads, pressures to perform, back biting, tight budgets, and cramped spaces, your emotional and physical health can suffer.

THE DEFINITION OF TOXIC

Wikipedia defines a toxic work environment as  “a workplace that is marked by significant drama and infighting, where personal battles often harm productivity.” Not only does a toxic work environment hurt employees, it hurts their productivity.

Ann, I’m sorry that happened to you. It is hard when you are in the middle of all the stress and dysfunction to have the perspective and courage to know it is time to leave. Thanks for sharing; I’m sure hearing your story will resonate with someone else. I’m so glad you went on to work you love. And you are so great at it!

Great post Marcy. I did #2 for probably longer than I should have because the toxic environment in the last place I worked and the abusive boss were both taking a great toll on my health - physical, mental and emotional. I felt a sense of loyalty to the one person who brought me in to the company and for whom I worked. But he had no power to change what was going on and I finally had enough and did #1. It was the best thing and while I wish I'd had the courage to do it sooner - the timing was right and I have never regretted it.
