Wisdom Meets Passion by Dan Miller and Jared Angaza

Wisdom Meets Passion by Dan Miller and Jared AngazaWisdom Meets Passion by Dan Miller and Jared Angaza is a fabulous book. The book is written toward an entrepreneurial bent by finding ones talent and interests and applying them in a manner to create value and life meaning for the individual. Dan is the father of Jared and lives in Franklin, Tennessee as an author, blogger, and coach. Jared lives in East Africa and is a social entrepreneur as the head of a jewelry company named KEZA. He also serves as a consultant to many African businesses.

In many ways I saw this book as a parenting book, as well as, about fulfilling ones passion in wise manner. As Jared’s father Dan raised him in a way that would allow Jared to flourish and capitalize on many of his talents and natural gifts. Jared was a child that many parents might have considered a head ache that struggled in a public school system. Jared was eventually home schooled and was allowed to develop in a natural way that helped him that likely would never have happened had he stayed in public school. By doing so Jared learned motivation and work ethic that has helped him fulfill a destiny by serving the people of East Africa. Dan spends a few pages on his own upbringing and what that meant to him. Dan also speaks on the lesson taught in the bible developing a child in the way he or she is bent. As the father of a three month old hold this information as invaluable.

Each chapter is wonderfully crafted with stories and illustrations. There are so many great quotes within the book that make you pause and rethink your own considerations towards life. I have subscribed to Dan’s blog over the past and it has impacted my life in a great way much of the book was in his blog at some point. As a person with a more pessimistic view I found myself in situations challenging my own thinking by asking, how would Dan Miller see this situation or circumstance.

There is a part in the book where Dan writes a portion called Ten Steps to Education and Becoming Rich starting on page 66 to page 72. These six pages alone are worth the $16.99 to buy the book, alone.

Jared’s contribution to the book is invaluable as well as eye-opening as he describes what it means to lead a rewarding life. His views on many things challenged my own thought process of how to view not-for profits and how they should operate. I also came to realize that material rewards are not the most fulfilling rewards that can be obtained in the life. The way many Americans (myself included) strive to financial freedom in many respects is no freedom at all. Jared describes his lifestyle in Africa and what we would consider cumbersome and not ideal he views as wonderful journey to build more relationships.

The only thing I did not like is that Jared’s part  is written in a burnt orange color. When reading late at night it definitely became a challenge. Then again staying up late to read rather than obtain precious sleep as a parent of a newborn is a true measure of how great the book is. Buy this book and start sucking the marrow out of life as Dan would put it.

I did receive a free copy of this book from the publisher, but was not required to write a positive review all thoughts are my own.
