Why Instant Gratification Is Not Always So Gratifying

Jump to Blog

We live in a world of instant gratification. We graduate from school, get married, and expect to have the same standard of living as our parents, forgetting that they already worked their entire lives to achieve those standards. When we borrow our way to instant gratification, it is the lender who owns and controls our privileged lifestyle, not us.

Question: What tips can you share for others to get through those moments of "I want it, even though I can't afford it?"

Love the cartoon. A picture is worth a thousand words. Thanks for the reminder of how silly we look when we think we know what we want and when and how. It helps me to remember God works on an eternal clock and His ways are better. If my desire is delayed after I've done my part, it is not the best time. He didn't go immediately to heal Lazarus because He wanted to show He is the Resurrection and the Life.

Thank you Kim - I am blessed beyond words with these three amazing people God allowed me and my husband the privilege of raising.

Ann, What a gift you have given to your children! I have seen too many young adults who have no concept of money, value, or debt. They only know that they want the "cool stuff" now and they go into debt to get it.

Wow, what great advice Ann. That message for kids and parents today is incredibly powerful. What a awesome mom you are to have had the wisdom to teach your kids this!! GREAT reminder for all of us parents out there.

Many thanks!

Jen

Jen I think as a mom, teaching my kids that they had to wait for things, to work for them and plan, was the most important way to raise 3 kids who are really amazing at delaying gratification.  I think too may kids are raised with such a sense of entitlement and enabled to just get whatever they want immediately that it is creating adults who end up in all kinds of difficulties - financial and otherwise!  My husband and I were raised that way and so I feel we have sent 3 young adults into this "instant" world who have the wisdom and patience to go against the flow!

Oh Randell, what a great example of shifting our perspective and gratitude to get through those moments. Wild about the bumper sticker timing. Blessings to you as well.

Thanks Randell and Kim!
