I’m putting on a vision board workshop next Saturday for a small group who want to get clear on their goals and their vision for their future.
Some people are skeptical.
I’m not surprised.
The way vision boards are usually presented is you get together with some friends, drink some wine and slap a few pictures on a board. You hang your vision board on your mirror and the next morning you wake up and voila!! There is a bag of money on your porch with a note to live the life you’ve always wanted. You tell your boss to take this job and shove it. You head off into the sunset and live happily ever after.
Unfortunately life doesn’t really work that way.
At least not for me... does it for you?
Here’s why; most of us create goals and vision boards around what we want to have. I want to have more money, a better/different job (or no job), a skinny body, a dream house, a perfect partner… what the heck-I want to have a dream life. We expect that once we have what we want then we will do what is necessary to accomplish goals and then eventually we will be who we want to be.
The plan is backward. Instead, to be successful at our goals we must begin by being who we want to be. What are your core values? What do they look like in action? If you were being the person you dream of, how would you look, feel and act differently?
The next step is to do the things that are necessary to be that person. You want to be generous, caring and serve others? You want to be a healthy person? How does that play out in your life? What habits do you put into place? What choices do you make on a daily basis in order to be the person you want to be?
The end result (and this is the point that is finally effortless) is that by being who you want to be and doing the things necessary to be that person, you will have what you want to have. Want to be a healthy person? Then chose a healthy lifestyle and follow that plan. Then you will have the skinny toned body that you want to have. Want to have a successful business that makes a difference in the world and serves others? Then be the leader that you were meant to be and take the steps necessary to make it happen.
Ultimately the reason that vision boards don’t work is because we don’t use them in the right way. We don’t get clear first on who we need to be and take action in that direction. We use them like a magical waiting game.
True enough that the universe is full of possibilities and abundant enough to grant our wishes. But we have to be ready. Otherwise we blow the opportunity, much like the lottery winner who is bankrupt in a year. We must first learn how to be rich and how to live rich before we have millions. We have to embrace the lifestyle of the healthy person, follow the plan and then we can have the body that reflects that. It is the journey that not only makes the goal possible but develops us into a person worthy of the goal.
All this is to say that the vision board workshop that I’ll be doing Saturday, March 25th is different. I could probably call it the being board. We’ll be spending the first half of the workshop getting clarity on who we want to be and what we need to do to make it happen. We will then make a vision board that will be a call to action so we can have the life we want.
Come join me…
