What's more important? Security, or career?

Say you have two options on the table:
1. A job that is in your career path, but is odd hours, variable income has no benefits, and no vacation pay.
2. A job that just misses the mark on your career path, salaried, has benefits, and about 5 weeks paid time off.

How important is security, vs following your career? I'd like to hear from both sides (if they're out there).

Comment by Rachael VT on November 2, 2012 at 7:01am: True Peter, there are always other options out there! Sometimes they are not as visible on the table as those presented to us. It is good to have a plan to pursue those options and be ready to grab them when they are on the table.

I found I could stay at the same company for now and pursue my passion in a "safe" environment. But someday (within the next 3-5 year) I will expand the possibilities and venture out on my own. For now I have some "security" while I am able to do meaningful work in the office and continue to do what I love without limits at home.
