Wouldn't it be great to ask God a question and have Him write the answer across the sky with one of those sky writing airplanes? I've never seen God do that, but I have come to understand that God really wants us to communicate with us. So why is it so hard to hear God? How do we know when God is talking?
Having spent a long time in theological education, I have heard plenty of conversations about hearing God's voice. They have ranged from insightful to absurd. I always love it when someone says, "Most theologians agree." Theologians never agree! That's just code for, "We really don't know how to explain this!"
I'm reminded of the story of Elijah. In 1 Kings 19, we see Elijah cowering in fear. Jezebel had killed all the prophets except for Elijah and she promised to kill him. The prophet started feeling sorry for himself. So, God told him to go stand on the mountain because he was about to hear from God.
