There is a quality that comes with being Southern that can only be understood if you live here. What seems strange to the rest of the world carries here a feeling of warm-heartedness and familiarity that I value deep in my soul. There is one place that has always seemed to be the incubator of Southern spirit. Whether it be the start of a song, the concocting of a tale or shelling of a pea, the front porch of the Southern home has always been a sanctuary. Here is my ode to those who have perfected the art of sitting on the porch.

Being from the "North" it was fun to read this!!! I love Kathy's note below - never would have thought of porches being for connection.

Chris, When I moved to the South, I was more interested in what the porches on homes looked like than the actual homes. I really loved the wrap around type and we have added more on to ours several times. We have spontaneous wine and cheese nights for any neighbors who want to stop by and have both front and back porches set up for dinners, meetings and even napping. I think the porch is the place that says, " Welcome, stop by and say, hey ( not hi in the South!). My dogs have outside beds for hanging out and I have outlets to plug in a computer so I can work as easily inside as outside. Like you, I am a fan or the Southern Porch. Enjoyed your post. Well said!
