We are bombarded everyday with literally thousands of messages. Some of them are specifically intended for us; others are simply part of the scenery. At the same time, we are sending out hundreds of messages. Some are stated clearly; others are communicated non-verbally.

So, how do you know if your message is clear? Give the following a try:

First, can you summarize your main point in one sentence of 25 words or less? If you can't pinpoint the gist of your message, others won't be able to decipher it.

Second, is your message stated in words the audience understands? It's easy to use technical jargon and code words when communicating internally. When that message is turned toward people who aren't so familiar with it, your language must connect.
