How to Take Action When You Don't Feel Like Taking Action

Jump to Blog

I got up this morning not feeling very motivated (yes, the Queen of Action doesn't feel like taking action sometimes too). My feet hurt, I am tired, and I frankly am feeling like it is nice to "take a time out from the world" under these warm covers. I don't feel like running, I don't feel like writing, and I don't feel like going through my agenda for the week.

While I am awesome at breaking my big goals down into accomplishable small tasks, there are times that I can still get overwhelmed. This feeling usually occurs when I am teetering on the verge of change and about to break through my comfort zone in order to grow.

So what "actions" can one take when we just don't feel like taking action?

Here are a few tips that can help:

  1. Remember to Fill Your Energy Tank - It is especially important during times we are feeling overwhelmed to take care of ourselves. In this busy world, we often forget to carve time out to be sure we are doing things that give us joy and abundance. For me it spending time in prayer each day, exercising, checking in with my inner circle of friends, and remembering to have FUN.
  2. Become Intentional With Time - Often when we fill our schedule to the brim, we can get overwhelmed and want to quit. We literally have no time to spare. If this is you, STOP and take a look at where you are spending your time. Becoming intentional with our time has been one of the best things for our family to make each other a priority versus running around like a chicken with its head cut off. 3. Break Big Goals Down - When seemingly impossible goals loom in front of us, we have to break those goals down into smaller management goals. If we don't, it will paralyze us with indecision, feeling stuck, and a sense of being completely overwhelmed. Click HERE for some great goal setting tips.
  4. STOP Making Excuses - There will ALWAYS be excuses for not wanting to take action. If you find you have a difficult time in following through on things, click HERE for helpful ways to quit making excuses. For me, it means if I am tired, I get to bed earlier. When I don't feel like running, I get out there and run for a mile. Most times after a mile, it starts to feel energizing. If it doesn't, I turn around, but only after I have gone that first mile. Otherwise, I know I would NEVER run as I NEVER seem to feel like going.

If you don't feel like taking action, try some of the tips above and let me know how it goes for you.

Question: What tips do you have for us during times you don't feel like taking action?

oh thanks Peter and Rose!

Rose, I am with you on that comment. Feeling overwhelmed seems to be something we all feel at one time or another.

Thanks Peter. Those little chunks are SO MUCH easier to devour I agree. It definitely has been a key to success in my life.

these are great reminders (I feel overwhelmed more times than I am willing to admit).

Great post Jen! Breaking things down into chunks is what has worked best for me. Then I feel a sense of immediate accomplishment and the action gets me moving forward again.
