This is the first in a four part blog post.
Have you ever had a dream derailed? Nothing can seem more frustrating. There are four main reasons a dream does not come to pass – discouragement, delay, disappointment and distraction. The key to overcoming each of these is taking action “right away” to not let them take hold in your life.
Discouragement is best described as the lack of courage and confidence. Confidence is an internal attitude of how you feel about yourself and how you see yourself. Lack of confidence usually stems from an outside source such as a family member, friend or boss who continues to devalue you. Have you ever had a boss or family member who continually had nothing positive to say about you or your performance? How you handle the negative influences is critical to achieving your dreams.
Here are a couple of things you can do to raise your courage and confidence level. Make sure to spend time with people who love and value you as a person – not based on your performance. You need cheerleaders in your life. Surround yourself with family and friends who keep encouraging you. Hopefully they will tell you what the Stuart Smalley character from Saturday Night Live says, “You’re good enough, smart enough and dog gone it, people like you!”
Even though you do not want the sum total of your worth based on your performance, nothing can make you feel as great about yourself as accomplishment. Go do something you know you do well, so you can feel the sense of accomplishment. Make sure it is something unrelated to your work and career. It needs to be something you can see or is measureable. Clean your car, clean your house, or cut your grass. Now you can look at what you just did with a sense of, “I did that!”…”I rock!”…”I am amazing!”
It is ultimately your decision how you feel about yourself and how you see yourself. However, it certainly doesn’t hurt to have some cheerleaders who love and value you as a person as well as feeling the sense of accomplishment we get from a job well done!
What can you do today to overcome discouragement?
