Are You A Leader? (Hint, You Are If You Choose To Be).

Leadership. It is my belief that we have a real lack of good leadership during these current times. Good leaders do exist, but they are the exception instead of the norm.

Common words and phrases go like this, don’t rock the boat, just keep your head down, it’s the way things are (you can’t change them), etc. See what I mean? This is apathy, fear, political correctness in it’s most insidious form!

What about you? Are you in the position of a leader? If you are, are you engaged in your part, or not? Are you in a place that needs a leader? Have you ever though that you could be one, but something has been holding you back?

Let’s get down to it then. You can choose to be a leader, IF you decide to. Are you the head of your division, company, team, or group? Are you in ministry, a pastor, or a teacher? How about your family, or even your group of peers? Leadership is much less about your position than it is about your determinations and actions.

How then, can you choose, or determine to become a leader?

1. Slow down for a moment and take a look at your situation. What is the reality? What are the needs? What actually must be done to move ahead and ultimately get to a better place?
2. Take a look at yourself. You are capable of great things, if you choose to grow yourself. Do you want to? It is an important question that only you can answer. If that answer is yes, what qualities do you already possess, and what do you need to think about and develop? A good place to start is right here.
3. Start with the vision. Make it part of who you are, tell the people who desperately need your leadership about it. Help them to see it, to envision a better reality.
4. Decide how to support the people you are leading, and start encouraging them.
5. Be the leader that you can be. If you do not determine and act, it will not happen. Being a leader is not a singular destination, but a journey of constant learning. Study leadership, people, and yourself. Constantly strive for improvement. Search yourself daily for ways to become better. Be who you are, and not someone else. Enjoy the process, and do not lose sight of the vision.

Leadership is about taking responsibility. So, are you going to be the leader? Will you make that choice? Can you set your resolve, and make that determination?
