032 Probiotics – another piece of the puzzle in health and weight loss

The good micro-organisms or probiotics can positively affect our digestive, immune, nervous and endocrine systems. Research also showed the interesting shift of bacterial composition in obese individuals.

More and more people are getting to know the benefits of having healthy “gut bacteria”, and the factors that cause imbalance include but not limited to: processed/refined foods, high sugar diet, antibiotics, beef and dairy from “conventionally” raised cattle, birth control pills, anti-cholesterol meds, antidepressants and blood thinning drugs. Health coach Ann Musico also talked about how our emotional state, especially stress, can influence our probiotics.

Ann and I discussed how to restore balance of our “gut bacteria”.

  • Foods that have more concentrated probiotics, such as traditionally cultured or fermented foods like yogurt (plain with no fruit or flavorings), kefir, kombucha, kimchi, raw sauerkraut, miso, and tempeh. One of my previous show guest Monica Brown recommended the brand “Bubbies” for traditionally fermented food, which is available in most major healthy food stores. Another great source of fermented products is Beyond Organics, an awesome company Ann is affiliated with.
  • Probiotic supplement, Ann offered a tip to test their effcacy and best time to take them.
  • Prebiotics – what they are and where can we find them!
