Profile Information

How did you hear about 48Days.NET, and what do you hope to get out of being a part of this community?
Dave Ramsey. I hope to become equipped with the tools that will enable me to move from a job that is not a good fit to making a living pursuing my lifelong passion of being a working artist.
What is your current work situation? Employee, self-employed, generating any income on your own?
CAD Drafter and artist
And then...what is your goal/dream for your work life?
To become a full time artist.
How about your personal life? Any specific goals or achievements or dreams you are pursuing (or want to pursue)?
I am working hard to become the best artist I can become. I have recently expanded my media to include both watercolor and oils.
I am at the age in life where I can no longer settle for just a job or a paycheck. I was put on this earth to paint. No longer can I allow my art to take a backseat to other things. It's time has come to shine. I'm hoping for motivation and inspiration from other 48 days members.
What would you say are your strongest talents? How are you 'wired' and what can you offer to the world (it's OK if you don't know yet, but knowing is key to pursuing your dreams!)?
When I take on a project I am committed to it and I am extremely loyal to those I work with and for.
Do you have a website presence anywhere?
Are you interested in finding a better job, starting a business, growing your current business, writing a book, blogging, podcasting, coaching, speaking, sales & marketing, or something else?
If you have a product or service to promote (now or in the near future) this is your shot to state it! Say all you'd like:
I create paintings in a variety of subjects. Although there are physical aspects of each subject that draw me to it, such as intense colors or strong lights and darks, I would have to say that each painting is a representation of who I am and howI view the world. I love it when my work evokes emotion in the viewer.

Residual Income for Visual Artists

Posted on January 25, 2012 at 9:01pm 0 Comments

I am very intrigued with the idea of residual income. I am working on designing step-by-step watercolor lessons in pamphlet form that I can print and sell to aspiring artists. There are a few artists doing this, but not a many. I think it has potential. Even better will be when I discover how I can sell them from my website, etsy or some other venue as a downloadable .pdf file. I won't have to handle anything and have no expense. I'm very excited about this idea.

Residual Income for Watercolor Artists

I am a watercolor artist looking for ways to transition to full-time pursuit of my passion. Dan talks about residual income or "SWIS" money. I'm looking for good ideas how I can do this as an artist. I look forward to hearing everyones ideas. If your interested you can view my paintings at www.spencermeagher.com…

Hi Spencer,

You said you were encouraged by my Kickstarter experience.  As an update, my project is going extremely well.  I have lots to do before my business launches this spring but the Kickstarter portion was very successful in making it happen for me.  I had written up the following tips for another 48days member so maybe you'll find them useful as you approach your project.  Sounds like a great idea for you watercolors (they're beautiful by the way).

#1 - I didn't get much general traffic from Kickstarter that pledged my project.  90% of the pledges came from friends, family, and my own networking efforts in the trenches.

#2 - Social media payed off but wish I had started sooner and more aggressively with a bigger pool of people.  I got more pledges from random people on Twitter than I did from general Kickstarter traffic.

#3 - In your communications, watch your language very carefully.  I found when I included things like "pledge, donation, fundraiser, support, backer" I didn't have as much success as when I said "pre-order, etc."  It's not charity, your supporters are getting something for their dollar.

#4 - If you can get on a curated page, it gives your project some credibility.  I'd do it if you have a tie in to one of them.

#5 - Set up a URL that auto-forwards to your project.  For me, I was able to hand people cards or just tell them to go to PortlandBoatTours.com to get them there.  Trying to communicate to people in the hall or elevator with the long and awkward Kickstarter URL is problematic and asking them to search Kickstarter to find you is a turnoff.

#6 - The number of days you are funding matters.  I picked 48 days because I'm a Dan Miller fan and it made sense.  I kind of thought the longer the better but in reality there is a flat spot in the middle and the longer you go the longer the flat spot is.  The excitement comes at the very beginning and the very end.  I was scared to do it but <30 days really is a good rule.

#7 - The very best technique that got backers to pledge my project was personal emails to folks with a relevant "hey, how have you been" with a personal tie in to their life and then sell them on my project.  Add the sense of urgency that it's ending soon and they need to act by a certain date.  I was very surprised at who did (and didn't) back my project.

I'm sure I've got more and will compose a good blog post (and chapter in my book) about this but if you've got specific questions I'm happy to help!!

Good luck on your Kickstarter project.
