How did you hear about 48Days.NET, and what do you hope to get out of being a part of this community?
My husband and I have been Dave Ramsey followers for years and years. We did away with all our credit cards about 8 years ago and lived on a budget ever since. We had just a small amount of debt that we paid off, but our biggest problem is raising the income to make our budget have more wiggle room and be able to save money in different categories.
What is your current work situation? Employee, self-employed, generating any income on your own?
My husband has worked at the same company the entire time we've been married (22 years). I did work until we adopted our first son. After a year of daycare for him, we decided that I would try to freelance and stay home with him. I was employed at Macmillan Publishing (now Pearson) at the time and did a lot of freelance work for them which paid very well at the time. Had we known then, what we learned about eight years ago, I might be telling a different story. We didn't know what we had.
Over the course of a few years, the page layout work that I did for them regarding the production started to shift overseas. Therefore, my freelance jobs started to fade away. Also, in the meantime, we adopted our second child and, as a mom, I was very busy again. Over the next many years I worked for the schools that my children attended for hardly any compensation or on a volunteer basis. I still tried to freelance, but time was hard to find to look for new customers.
For the past five years I worked at an elementary school as a technology instructor (K-5). I enjoyed the work and was able to pull out my technology skills - especially when the Young Author's time rolled around.
(Side story about my teaching days: Every year, I took all the 1st and 2nd graders (approx 250 students) and taught them how to "publish a book." They would type their story, I then sat with each student individually during my lunch and prep period for about a month in a half to read their story with them and help them through an "editing" process. After that, I taught them how to type in their stories into Google Docs, and print. They then they illustrated their books with crayons on the computer lab floors and desks while listening to music. To finish up, I brought in a CBG binding comb machine and sat with each student and taught them how to make a "real" published book. Everyone of them loved it - right from the beginning in which they hand-printing their rough draft, to picking the font they wanted in their book, to pulling out the finished bound book off the GBC machine.)
Since I wasn't a licensed teacher, the pay was as if I was an instructional aide. Needless to say, that didn't really help our budget. I had to resign last year due to some health problems. This caused us to go into a slight bit of debt last year. We can stand it!
After some soul searching (maybe a blessing in disguise) we decided that I would really take my freelance "hobby" to the next step and start a full business and work from home. I began making cold calls to find work as a page layout contractor and actually gained two clients fairly quickly.
I was ready to move forward and started listening to Dan's podcast because, to be honest, I was somewhat tired of listening to Dave ALL the time. Right away I got hooked and joined in on the webinar, "Ask a Coach Series: Marcy Travis around Your Positive Mindset & How it Affects the Job Search, organized by Jen McDonough. I really enjoyed it and joined the 48Days.net community site, and here I am.
And then...what is your goal/dream for your work life?
Right now, I have a lot to learn. This is a whole new world for me that I am excited to jump into. I am ready to reach out and connect with people and learn as much as I can in order to grow my business and be able to start serving small publishers with my page layout and manuscript production preparation skills which I love providing. I am attending Christy Wright/Dave Ramsey Business Boutique in Nashville, TN in November. I am really looking forward to that event.
Our budget will get that flexibility that my husband and I have longed for over the years. Our son is now 18 and has moved out and our daughter is now 15. Even though we weren't able to do as much traveling and "fun" things while they were young, I am hopeful that now when we will be traveling, they will appreciate it so much more and we will have a lot of fun together!
Time will tell over the next year how my goals and dreams change once I get really get into this new chapter or Part II of my career.
How about your personal life? Any specific goals or achievements or dreams you are pursuing (or want to pursue)?
I strive for more balance and begin to put into practice the time management skills needed to be a successful self-employed woman, a wife, a mother, a daughter, and a friend. I wish also to increase my knowledge about other religions to become a better Catholic. I feel that understanding other faiths can challenge me to truly understand and study my own faith that I have probably gotten to the point of not knowing how blessed I am and it is important to me to be better spiritually.
What would you say are your strongest talents? How are you 'wired' and what can you offer to the world (it's OK if you don't know yet, but knowing is key to pursuing your dreams!)?
Strongest talents? Sticking with projects (usually volunteer projects) that I get myself into. I'm usually very organized and develop systems that I put in place, for me if I volunteer for the project again, or for someone else who steps up to the plate.
If I can transfer that passion, energy and dedication to see it through a volunteer project, I can surely do that to grow my business.
Are you interested in finding a better job, starting a business, growing your current business, writing a book, blogging, podcasting, coaching, speaking, sales & marketing, or something else?
I am pretty sure this question has been answered in the questions above. But, please don't look at the website yet. I am not a website designer and have just started using WordPress.
If you have a product or service to promote (now or in the near future) this is your shot to state it! Say all you'd like:
There seems to be a lot of authors in this group. I know you guys must work with Publishers. I am trying to target smaller publishers who publish 500 or less titles per year. Any subject matter is great.
Feel free to share your Twitter name, Facebook page, and any other social media way to connect with you!
Currently I am working on establishing my social media presence. I just started trying to design or use WordPress and I am not a website designer. I have a learning curve using WordPress.
