What is the difference between Alzheimer's and dementia?

Started this discussion. Last reply by Sheila Tidwell Jul 21, 2011. 1 Reply

That is an excellent question, and it is the question I hear most often.  Let me explain.  Alzheimer's is a TYPE of dementia.  There are several diseases that cause dementia, and Alzheimer's is just…Continue

DEMENTIA AND BREAKFAST SMOOTHIES

Every morning is made better when we start it with vegetables and fruit.  Now stop snarling your nose at the thought of eating vegetables for breakfast.  I have the perfect recipe to make that experience something you totally look forward to indulging in each morning.  It is always my goal to get a ton of fruit and vegetables in my body each and every day.  Starting with Carol's Breakfast Smoothie is a great way to make it happen.  Promise to try it at least once.  Then write me with your thoughts.  Bet you will like it!Using a good blender (I am the proud owner of a VitaMix, but I use to own a Ninja Blender), add 1 1/2 cups of your favorite milk.  I highly recommend you avoid dairy products and use soy or almond milk.  Add two frozen bananas cut in half.  Now throw in two very large handfuls of fresh spinach or fresh kale (yes, I said kale) and two carrots washed and cut into pieces.  Prepare yourself for this next part, I now add one or two washed and sliced fresh squash.  If you…See More

Dementia and Physical Activity

“Put your back into it.”  “Use a little elbow grease!”  These are sayings I can remember my Daddy spouting when my sisters and I were growing up.  Daddy really should have had a strapping son amongst his children, but he was “blessed” with three girls.  Not a tomboy among us, either.  It was not unusual for Daddy to instruct  us to lift heavy objects or learn to change the oil in the car. I did not enjoy these lessons.  To this day, I don’t have a clue how to change the oil in the car.  Furthermore, I don’t want to know.  I am very much involved, though, in many activities that provide physical movement. If your loved one with dementia is not involved in physical movement each day, then let’s make a change today.  The individual with Alzheimer’s type dementia is burning calories faster than someone without dementia.  Therefore, they are more likely to be cold.  My mother will hop in the bed, pull the covers over her head and snuggle quicker than jack can jump over the candlestick…See More

Dementia and a Blank Mind

Have you ever had one of those moments (or one of those days) when your mind just seemed  blank.  You tried to focus.  You tried to gather your thoughts.  You concentrated.  You pondered.  Yet, nothing good came from all the effort and energy expended. Our loved ones suffering from dementia experience this frequently.  A thought will come to mind, but only part of the thought or memory is there.  They may try with diligence, but the memory will not surface.  Why does that happen? The brain holds memories in different regions of the brain.  Language and music are on opposites sides of the brain.  Recent memories and memories from fifty years ago are stored in different areas.  Memories with emotion and memories without emotions are processed differently.  All of these factors come together to make memory recall a process that requires the various parts of the brain to work together to make a memory appear in full. When Alzheimer’s invades the brain, all areas of the brain are damaged. …See More

Dementia and Talking Crazy

OK, you need to know something at the git-go.  Dementia causes ME – the caregiver – to say crazy things.  There are times when I wonder who has Alzheimer’s.  Is it Momma, or is it me?  Let me tell you why.I have a very clear understanding of the fact my mother has Alzheimer’s.  I can tell you the details of the day she was diagnosed, chapter and verse.  I can explain what is happening inside her brain, and I can even anticipate SOME of what the future may hold for her and our family.  However, I say with a sigh, I still start sentences with, “Hey Momma, do you remember ….”  Then is when I want to get my brain scanned.Fortunately, Momma has a sense of humor, and she usually has a comeback like, “Have YOU forgotten I have dementia?  Because I have not forgotten that little fact.” Caregiving is a challenge.  Sometimes I say things that make me question my own sanity, but one thing is always certain.  I love that woman like there is no tomorrow.  I’m also very glad she is patient with me…See More

Profile Information

How did you hear about 48Days.NET, and what do you hope to get out of being a part of this community?
By listening to the podcast. I hope to learn ways to build my business.
What is your current work situation? Employee, self-employed, generating any income on your own?
Self-employed - I have owned Carol's Cleaning Company for 22 years. I have just opened Senior Life Journeys. It is a company geared toward educating family members who are on the journey of dementia
And then...what is your goal/dream for your work life?
I want to leave the cleaning industry except for those customers who cannot take care of their needs because of health reasons. Then I want to be able to triple my income with Senior Life Journeys.
How about your personal life? Any specific goals or achievements or dreams you are pursuing (or want to pursue)?
I don't know that I could be more pleased with my personal life. God has blessed me abundantly.
What would you say are your strongest talents? How are you 'wired' and what can you offer to the world (it's OK if you don't know yet, but knowing is key to pursuing your dreams!)?
I am driven and ambitious. I don't mind putting in the work necessary to be successful. I also believe God put us on this earth to serve Him, and the work we do is part of that service. I am determined to be of service to His people in a way that changes lives but also supports my family well.
If you have a product or service to promote (now or in the near future) this is your shot to state it! Say all you'd like:
I have completed the Life Coaching course offered by Dan Miller, and I will be attending the two day workship in a few weeks. I am offering coaching services for those that are traveling the journey of dementia with a loved one. Education brings power, and power brings hope. If there is one thing people dealing with dementia need....it is HOPE. I focus strongly on seminars as a means to offer group settings for educating people seeking help. Knowing what to expect, how to handle situations, knowing you are not alone, and having a support group are vital for good health of the caregiver and success of the caregiving.

Carol - I personally don't see benefit in spending a large amount of money to be able to oxygenate or alkalize water.  I know people sell machines that supposedly do this.  I feel God made pure water and He didn't super oxygenate or alkalize it.  That being said, with our environment, foods and toxins making the water a little more alkaline can be beneficial in helping your body absorb nutrients.  I like Dr. Willard's Water - you add 1/2 tsp. to your water and it does the same thing.  I think the bigger issue is being sure the water is truly as pure as you can get.  I am a Mission Marketer for Beyond Organic and we sell Supreme Mountain spring water that they've tested to be extremely pure.  I would say it can't hurt you if you want to try oxidized or oxygenated water but I don't see a need as long as you are drinking the purest water available to you.  I hope that helps!

Welcome Carol,

I try to take time each week to welcome new members to 48Days.Net. So, let me say "welcome" to you! I know you will find this to be a great site filled with people who are experiencing true success in both life and work.

Something I noticed on your profile is you listen to Dan's podcast. Same here. He gives great advice.

Also, I'd like to point out that one of the best places to connect with other liked-minded people here is in the GROUPS section. There are groups for just about every interest you can think of, and if you can't find a group that interests you, you can start one. Groups are my favorite part of 48Days.Net!

Finally, if you happen to be a speaker or author (or want to become either), check out these two groups. They are two of the most popular groups on the site because of all the great conversation taking place:

* Speak It Forward -- REAL Success and Profit for Speakers!
* Write It Forward -- REAL Success and Profit for Writers!

Again, enjoy 48Days.Net. It's a great place to be!
