I've been speaking to a lot of people lately who have big dreams, but they aren't really doing anything to achieve them.
When I ask them what's holding them back I get a variety of reasons. Here are just a few:
"I don't know where to start"
"I dont have the skillset"
"I don't have the resources- time, money, connections"
What's holding you back from getting started or taking things to the next level?
Great question because I really spent a lot of time digging into this at the end of 2016. The only thing holding me back is me. The narratives I tell myself, fear, and not believing in myself. It's been a rollercoaster of a process, but is incredibly freeing.
Thanks for sharing Holly! Yes I found that to be true for me as well for years. When I realized the ONLY thing stopping me from accomplishing my dreams was me- I refused to get in my own way anymore. Its very freeing.
This is a great question, and I am definitely in that camp at times. I am about half way through The 12 Week Year. https://www.amazon.com/12-Week-Year-Others-Months-ebook/dp/B00CU9P3...
It's reminding me that the problem is execution. He states that if people would choose a few things and do them consistently they could double or triple their income by applying what they already know.
"We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then, is not an act, but a habit." Aristotle
"Long term results are created by the actions you take every day." Chapter 5
So true Barb! You are the second person who recommended that book. I'm going to have to check it out!
My struggle is prioritizing projects. I have too much on my plate, get overwhelmed and then let things fall through the cracks. My mastermind group suggested I read the 12 week year. I think its time I listen!
I am focused on building my speaking business, but I have yet to get my first "big" gig. I've been doing smaller engagements, because I really do believe they have been God appointments, but they weren't intended to be income-producers. I told my friend, who is also one of my ministry partners that even if I became a well-known, highly-paid, motivational speaker, I never want to lose sight of being able to minister to small groups. That being said, I also want to start speaking in schools and businesses for the bread and butter, so I can afford to do the other too. So I guess the thing holding me back is not being quite sure how to get more paid speaking engagements.
Congratulations on how far you've come Holly!
I can relate. It's very easy for me to give my services away. It's very difficult to charge.
What if you set parameters for yourself that 90% of your work will be paid, and 10% will be serving small groups?
The best marketing is word of mouth. Have you reached out to the members of the groups you've spoken to and asked for referrals?
Good Luck to you!
Hey! It's another Holly! Too awesome. I have reached out to some of the groups, and that has been good. I keep feeling like I need to do something else to reach out to ones I may not have yet had connections with. I suppose part of it is just time I'm giving myself time to build momentum. I probably am going to have to be more meticulous about choosing a percentage that I will give away for free and stick to charging for the rest though. :-)
Associations are your best strategy to get in front of decision makers, get leads and start conversations/word of mouth.
Don't forget you can always negotiate your fees to build experience and confidence.
Hi Holly, I went through the same challenge with various areas of my business. Getting comfortable and confident in charging for your services was the biggest mindset shift for me.
I welcome you to join me in a free group coaching session on March 15 1-2:30 pm where we discuss various strategies like this to help you accomplish your goals.
Hey there, Stephanie. That sounds really nice! You can inbox me more information or you can post it here. I'll be looking for it!
Hi Holly, i'm in the same position. I just joined this group. i haven't been active on 48 Days for over a year.
I have a message that I believe God wants me to share through speaking. In 2015 I shared my message through a book I wrote and published. The book is about my life story and how God called me to pursue His calling He gave me when I was 15 years old. I felt called to be a teacher or go into the ministry. But I didn't pursue that calling until I was 38 years old. I started teaching at 43 years old.
My message is "It's not too late to pursue your dreams/God's calling"
I have spoken at one church so far. I want to find places to speak at for free until I get some experience and and have some videos to post and share with event planners and churches. I also want to start a Life Coaching Business through my speaking.
My struggle is finding places to speak at. My target audience is men ages 25-50, who want to live a passionate purpose-filled life. I want to encourage them that it's no too late to make a change.
Do you know of any Master Mind Groups for new speakers/life coaches?
