Dan lists Piano Tuning as one of his 48 Low Cost Business Ideas.  He states that there are an estimated one out of every three households that have a piano.  I find that really hard to believe and also question the future of this trade.  Nonetheless, I've decided to do it.  Started learning in early January of this year via a correspondance course I ordered over the internet.  It's going well.  I'm reasonably confident that I can do this, along with some standard repair jobs of which I'm also learning.  I've been practicing on our own piano at home and am now having some business cards printed up.

I'm curious to know if any others out there have decided to try Dan's business idea of Piano Tuning [and repair]?? And if so, how's it going?

Thanks,

Scott

Thought about it once or twice-- I've got the mechanical ability and the ear for it, but never pursued it.  I think to really make a go of it you would need a fairly broad geographical range, make it easy for people to find you, and make it easy for them to pay you (portable on-the-spot credit card processing.) Most people don't tune their piano nearly as often as they should, so you may also need to be a teacher.  Be excellent, be consistent.  Best wishes!

I think it's a great idea, Scott. You're exactly right; many homes have a piano in them. I think the challenge is doing it in a different way, perhaps. Not that you need to, but what if you did?

Perhaps a product or online manual to teach someone how to tune themselves would work well?
