Have to confess, I like Rob Orr's article better.

Even if it doesn't have a whiteboard. :)

Comment by Dean Mastern on March 12, 2017 at 9:55am

Thanks Billie. I used the name for a while as a nickname/handle/call sign before I even thought about using it as a brand. When I did the research on it, I was actually amazed that no one ever used it before. Although I am technically still in the pre-jump stages, I think that having the brand name is a good foundation.

Rob, I just read your post. Very informative. I would add that people should also stay away from underscores in their domain names, and techie/uber-hacker dumb stuff like K3V1N.

When I first saw someone using this, I couldn't figure out if they were using a ham radio call sign, or if they were a Star Wars fan (C3PO, R2D2, etc.). When I asked, he said it was his name: Kevin.

I've seen other examples that people thought were clever, but were more like stupid personalized license plates that no one can figure out.

Some people just don't think about how these names will affect their business.

That's an amazing name Dean! Totally cool!

Hey Alan - I just covered the same thing! I didn't do mine on a whiteboard, but I just finished this post a couple weeks back that covers choosing domain names, and goes a little bit deeper in to the whole idea.

I just wanted to mention that the Trademark registration process isn't really very difficult. I did it myself without a lawyer or any formal help. It can be done completely online, and there are plenty of free online sources that can help you if you have any problems.

I did it a couple of years ago, and if I remember correctly, the cost was only around $350 or so. I know that may be a lot to some folks right now, but it is a good way of protecting your business.

I did it after I read a marketing book that prompted me to "put some skin in the game" and make an investment in my business. I picked a name that was broad enough to cover any of the things that I am interested in, just in case I wanted to switch directions later, I wouldn't have to get another Trademark.

BTW, my business name/brand is Dirt Road Cowboy. That name can cover all the areas that I want to pursue such as: writing, arts, education, entertainment, music, or pretty much any creative or educational area that I have an interest in.

That's why I recommended that you spend a bit of time in getting the right name. If you get it right, you can keep building your brand for life, even if you change directions.

Thanks, Dean! – Even more to ponder.

For those who haven't read the article yet, it is on an SEO company's website, which helps explain their excitement about that particular subject.

Comment by Dean Mastern on March 11, 2017 at 12:37pm

That was a pretty good article Alan. I agree with what he said, but I would add a few things:

1. Forget about SEO.  There isn't much chance of it working to get the average person on the first page of a Google search, especially if the business is something that is competing with millions of others, like coaching. You'd be lucky to get in the first 100 pages before Google changed everything and you disappeared back into oblivion.

2. Spend plenty of time getting the business name right (do lots of Google searching, including domain name searching).Make sure that it is broad enough to cover everything that you want to do in your business.

When you think you have a good one, go to the USPTO website and see if it is Trademarked. If not, get it Trademarked! Then you own it and have legal grounds to keep others from infringing on it later.

If it is already registered, then you need to keep trying until you find something that you can own. BTW, you can't trademark your name unless you are a big celebrity, so find something that can be used for a business.

If someone else is already using the domain name for a similar business, they have prior rights to the name, and could fight your Trademark registration. If they can prove that they were using the name for business before you, they will win and you will lose your Trademark application money.

Search thoroughly!

3. Once you own the rights to your business name, then go through any other formalities to get your business legal. (If needed.)

4. After you find out that you have the rights to your business name, then build your website and get serious about your new business.

Those are just my personal recommendations. Happy Jumping!

Two of the most common hurdles entrepreneurs "struggle to get right" is what to name their business, and finding the right domain name.

This article (wish I had written it) offers some points to ponder.

I overheard an interesting conversation the other day. The core question was, has the social part of social media become completely irrelevant?

While I didn't participate personally, I must say both sides had interesting points.

What about you? Do you have thoughts on the subject?

Comment by Kathy on March 6, 2017 at 6:49pm

i couldn't agree more, Alan. I have recommended that book over and over to people.
