Your place for community & resources to find or create work you love
We are so glad you're here and ready to take the next step! We created 48days.net as a place for community. For people to encourage each other and help each other in finding or creating work that is meaningful.
But frankly, we've outgrown it, so we're moving to provide you new resources.
48Days.net will be closing as it is today on November 30, 2017. Until then current members can click the button below to access groups and resources.
If you're new to 48days.net, connect here for a close up look at our thriving 48 Days Eagles Community and to get weekly free resources and motivation as you find and create work you love.
Hello, everyone. I'm new to the 48Days.net community, but I am interested in starting my own career coaching business targeted to adults and students. At the moment, I have been devoting 2-5 hours each week to think through my business plan (using Dan's model from his FaithIt website) and reaching out to other successful career coaches to see what they know.
At the moment, my goals for my business are:
*Save $500 to start my business by June 30th, 2017 (business cards, web site, paying to register with the government, etc.)
*Devote 2-5 hours a week to working on my business plan, adjusting along the way.
*Draft a career-related e-book by December 31st, 2017 to sell on my website as a digital product
*Launch my website by January 18th, 2018
Would anyone offer me some advice? I'll have a 30 hour a week position starting now through the end of our school year (May 2017), and I don't know how to know when is the time to act on my plan and put myself out there to serve a client.
Thanks for your feedback! I appreciate it.
Welcome to the JumpStart group!
Love the enthusiasm you're showing about your coaching service. There is one thing I would suggest reconsidering. The timeline. Is there something major that would absolutely prevent you from "officially" launching by June 1?
Would love to chat with you about that sometime.
Let me know if you're interested.
Sure. Feel free to send a message to my inbox here or my email - email@example.com
As far as June 1st, I don't know what things will be like in June. I know it will be summer, and that will mean a lot of traveling for students and families, and maybe that is bringing in some personal worry.
I want to start off slow with this business, meaning that if everything is not perfect at first, I'm okay with that. I think I have a good "WHY" for why I want to offer career coaching services and a working business plan. Before June, I'd have to have a basic website in place where I detail how I could help someone and include a weekly blog, make sure I'm filed with my state / government agencies / tax person, and be able to accept online/card payments.
I hope that's a bit more clear. Thanks for reaching out, Alan.
Welcome and so great to hear your initiative!
I'll second Alan's note above and encourage you to move forward sooner with your business. You mention that you want to launch a website by January of next year. That's far too long to wait! You can get a good website set up fairly cheap by the end of this week if you want using tools like Bluehost, Wordpress or any number of other hosting services. It may not be perfect, but you can always upgrade it later on once you have some income and can afford to spend a little on someone to help you with a website.
I think if I were in your shoes, I would concentrate on getting a website put together ASAP and start finding ways to collect email addresses to a list and building up a few coaching clients to get your feet wet. If it turns out that that career path isn't something you enjoy, at least you know sooner rather than later and can adjust more quickly!
Best of luck and let me know if there is anything I can do to help you out!
Thanks for your feedback. I appreciate the advice. At this point, I am looking to set up my business with the protections I need for my state and setting up my financial processes in the coming month so I'm not mixing my personal and business funds. I've started making a trial website with SquareSpace to get the look and feel of what my website would be. For email, I'd like to use MailChimp which I have used before. Also, I've watched a few marketing videos from Donald Miller's Story Brand which were helpful to help me craft the wording and language for my website.
Thanks again for your advice and your encouragement. I appreciate it!
Hey Randy - I'd highly recommend reading the 10X Rule by Grant Cardone. That book has had a substantial impact on how I look at developing ideas, products, marketing, sales, etc. There is so much good stuff in that book you'll be glad you read and will want to go back to it over and over. I've been through it at least twice that I can think of and have the audio book, plus the Kindle version. Yes - it's that good.
I love coaching and if you are truly committed I think you will love it as well. I think if you are working 2-5 hours a week on developing your coaching business, if you are really doing the right things, you should be well ready to launch before 12 months have passed. As the others have said, getting clear on the plan you need to develop and implementing it bit by bit should surely have you in a place to start earning some income well before the end of 2017,
I do understand the desire to start slow and do things well, but sometimes planning so very far out is a license to drag your feet or be less comfortable when it's time to "ship". I see this a lot with clients who have great ideas for a successful business but who stall with follow through using excuses and logistics.
I am not suggesting you are doing this, just wondering why you wouldn't want to aim for starting your coaching business sooner to at least gain some credibility.
I always tell my clients that they don't have to be perfect to be an expert in their field, in fact they may be more apt to find clients when they are more transparent.
Good luck with your ventures. Let us know how things turn out periodically and please reach out to me if I can help you in any way. http://kathybrunner.com
