I have had a passion for cars my entire life. Last year I decided to start an Auto dealership and am making my dream come true. If you have an auto business, want one or just want to talk about one and just love messing with cars welcome

So I have been looking over all my deals from last year and what I have been doing and find it's not working great. I have been selling normal cars and making a nice profit on each, but not enough to…Continue

The auto auctions in my area are pretty insane. Lately the prices have shown to sell at what I would sell for to the public. I find it very hard to see how the smaller businesses are going to survive…Continue

Comment by Derrick Lopez on December 20, 2011 at 6:36am Tomasz congrats on completing the course. It seems your state is doing something right. I could have only wished my state was interested in helping us understand their laws. I mean they issued me temp plates and on the last inspection they took them from me stating I should not be doing retail in my area. The funny thing is DMV here does not have two different licenses, but only one so to tell me I can't do retail is funny. I just don't have the means to hire legal counsel and fight so I just continued to do my business. After speaking with many other dealers in my building it's something that's been happening here for a years and it seems it will just be like this. I will just continue to use this space until I can afford to move to a full lot as I would like in the future. Keep up the good work thou
Comment by Tomasz Strzemecki on December 18, 2011 at 4:46pm I came back from the Dealer Training course offered and required by the state of Illinois as part of dealer's license application process. It was an 8 hour long course and it went over building and lot requirements, paperwork, tax forms required by the state (by far the most boring part) and overall pointers on how to successfully run the business in accordance with the law. Pretty informative, there was a test at the end (which I passed :-)), which gets you this professional looking diploma with your name printed on it. Now I would be able to legally apply for dealer's license in the state of IL.
Comment by Tomasz Strzemecki on December 6, 2011 at 10:46am Dlo, thanks for encouragement! Did you start right away by buying or leasing a lot with a building or are you sharing an existing business with parking spaces? Also, how do you take care of financing for customers? I'm dying to hear this one...
Appreciate your help. Hopefully I will be able to contribute soon.
Comment by Derrick Lopez on December 5, 2011 at 12:58pm Tomasz, I am glad you have joined us and that we share a passion
I am glad your state offers those classes as mine did very little to help in the process. I felt as I was a criminal at times trying to obtain a license to sell cars. The good part is it's not hard at all just time consuming and tedious, but I am sure you will get it done
If I can help an anyway let me know
Comment by Tomasz Strzemecki on December 1, 2011 at 5:35pm Dlo, I just joined the 48day.net site and I am happy to find a group for Auto Businesses. Thank you for starting it.
I too (just like all the folks here) love cars! My dream is to one day own a BMW dealership but first things first... I need to get in the business of used cars LEGALLY. As we all know it's a pain to get be able to satisfy all of the rules and regulations to start a legitimate auto dealership. In my state - Illinois, the first step is to attend an 8 hour class (to my surprise it's free!) in which they will explain the requirements of starting a dealership in accordance with IL regulations. I am scheduled to attend December 16th. I will keep you updated on what it is and my overall progress. For now it seems like a distant future... :-/
Anyways, glad to be a part of the Auto Bussinesses network and looking forward to chatting with you guys.
Comment by Derrick Lopez on November 4, 2011 at 8:42pm Been a little, but I am back.
The business has been a bit slow, but I am gonna keep trucking along. When I started I was buying and selling cars from 3 to 5 G's. Not easy to make sales, but they were moving. Now I bought a few SUV's expecting the winter, but they are not moving. I haven't made a sale in a few weeks and it's getting very frustrating. What are your recommendations on increasing sales? Should I sell these at a loss and go back to what was working for me?
Comment by Derrick Lopez on October 3, 2011 at 7:24pm This week DMV came to inspect my shop and they informed me I am not zoned for retail sales. These jokers are not going to make it easy for me to achieve the success I desire. They sold me the temp plates to give to retail customers and now they state I am not zoned for this. Thankfully I joined a used car dealer assosiation who is connecting me with a legal time.
I will let you know what happens
