I think answers to the question of how to make the blog "better" depend a lot on what you want to get out of the blog.
So what do you want your blog to achieve?

P.S. an "About" page telling your visitors who you are and what your passion/mission is, would be a good place to start making it "better".

Also, I would suggest changing the header photo on your theme. Changing the picture will give the site a look slightly different from the Wordpress defaults. There are a few free options for pictures out there since you only need one, but you could also take a picture of something in your home town and put it up.
Scott,
Just went to your site, and enjoyed reading your first post. How true it is.
One thing that I did not notice is an ABOUT page. I search this out usually whenever I get to a site to see what is it is...well, about. Also, put up a BIO page of yourself. That helps others connect with a real live person.
Then, if you have not there is a ton of good info at www.bloggingyourpassion.com

This is a great start. Congratulations!
I agree with others that you want a page telling people about yourself. What is the purpose of this blog? Are you starting a business or is this just for fun? What information do you want to share with people that will be an extension of your blog page -- this will give you a hint about other pages you should add.

I am in about the same boat as you. Although I have a few free blogs, and I had a boiler plate site through GoDaddy (the service sucked) I now have a sight I am trying to build from scratch. Being a podcast junkie I am following the advice of the two I respect the most. That would be Cliff Ravenscraft and Jack Spirko. I am hosting through bluehost and using a theme called atahualpa. The theme was recommended by Spirco and I have found lots of free tutorial videos on youtube.
Good luck, and if you want to follow another newbie, check out the progress over the next few weeks on jesusfreaktrucker.com

I like your site name! Definitely add an "About Trucker Tom" page and add some photos. Have you found a way for your trucker friends to listen to your podcasts while they are driving?

I like your website and your mission.
The about page will be my focus next weekend. I finally put a link to the podcast site on podbean last night. I am giving myself four months to learn and build the website. I picked a template with lots of youtube training video and that is helping. As soon as I am comfortable with Wordpress I will move on to feedburner. Also, I have quite an archive of pictures from my travels and I thought I would add one to every 2nd or 3rd post as a way to keep people coming back.
Thanks for the response,
God Bless,

I am getting started with my own blog and am struggling a bit to make it look better. The feedback to your question has been helpful. There are a couple of ideas that will help me right away. I keep questioning wether I should spend some money to get up to speed faster, or keep trying to look for free info. So far, I am just reading and learning what I can from Hostgator and other sites. Thanks for posting the question. I visited your site and read some of your posts. I like what you are trying to do with your and wish you well. My site is: workyoucanlove.com.
