12/9/14 Dan interviewed Jonathan Milligan around the topic of blogging around your passion.

Here are some of the highlights covered in the session this week, however, we would encourage you to listen to the show as quite a bit of valuable information was shared:

  • Jonathan's journey of started to blog to where he is making his full-time living off of blogging.
  • Ways he has found helpful in becoming profitable through blogging includes:
    • Active Income "trading time for dollars": Coaching and resume makeovers.
    • Passive Income: Downloadable courses.
  • Some of the ways Jonathan has found helpful is going to to where your audiences are hanging out and be ready to add value.
  • Dan and Jonathan stressed the importance of commenting on other people's blogs - the more interested you become in others, the more interesting you will become.
  • 300-700 word blog posts are ideal, just as long as it makes the point. Anything over this generally means the blog could be more concise.
  • As far as frequency, he used to do five blogs a week, however, he is currently doing one podcast and one blog post a week.
  • The acronym he uses to post a blog is POST:
    • Purpose: Helps to have a definite purpose of why a blog is written. The headline needs to be catchy and interesting - it is the purpose of the blog.
    • Outline: Think through the pieces of the blog.
    • Scannable: Content should be easy to scan as it is easy to lose people. Short sentences and short paragraphs.
    • Teaser: Teaser question at the end...a good blog post is just the beginning to a discussion.
  • Getting people to sign up for his email list is the very central to everything he does. At the end of every blog he has been having a bonus content that he uses as a opt in.
  • When you publish your blog, remember it is out there to provide great info, educate, and/or evoke emotions such as inspire, outrage, entertain, etc.
  • At the end of the day, it is about building relationships.
  • A great way to start a blog is to start with the 10 to 20 questions people have and then answer one at a time for each blog.
  • Write your blog first, then go back and edit.
  • Jonathan uses www.coschedule.com to schedule his blogs.
  • Having your blog post on your home base is usually best. He doesn't recommend having duplicate content. If you are going to post in two different places, he recommends tweaking it to be a little different rather than posting word for word.
  • Don't be afraid to start blogging - if you have a message to share, start. Know that every person started out unknown at some point. Know that the process is a journey and when you embrace the value of knowing it is a long term process rather than a short term process, you will be better off.
