I started davidcreel.wordpress.com this month and its going better than expected (meaning I didn't think anyone but my Mom would be interested in what I have to say). It's a blog about personal finances and life. However, I think I may start my own website but I ran into a bit of a problem. Apparently, some other David Creel already has davidcreel.com, and I am trying to get it from them. If I am not able to get that domain, should I use davidcreel.net or something with .com? The only .net website that I can think of right off the top of my head is this one, so I don't know if that would be best.
Fire away folks,
The Real David Creel

Good for you for picking up blog traffic!!! My mom doesn't even read my blog...she doesn't even know what a blog is *SIGH*
Michael Hyatt treated your question in his first podcast: http://michaelhyatt.com/001-10-ways-to-generate-more-blog-traffic.html
I think your name.net is a great way to get around it if you can't get your name back (and, by the way, keep trying to get your name back if you can from those dingalings). According to Hyatt you could also do realdavidcreel.com or davidcreelis.com. I would stay away from dcblog because you may want to evolve past a blog some day and DC comic freaks may want that name some day :D

Permalink Reply by David Creel on May 25, 2012 at 12:25am my dad, aunt, and grandmom don't know what a blog is either. Actually my dad and grandmom (memaw) don't even know how to turn on a computer. Good point on DCblog, but if the DC comic freaks wanted it, they would need to pay me a (Dr. Evil voice) healthy ransom... :)
Permalink Reply by Annie Kontor on May 25, 2012 at 12:32am Oh you have a Memaw?! That is so sweet!
Hey don't you be knocking comic readers--we ain't freaks! Maybe we could provide a 'healthy ransom' of...(pinky to corner of lip...) $100,000,000?!?

glad you got the Austin Powers reference... and thanks for the input!

You must be a Marvel fan but because DC is superior in every way and we are magnanimous in victory, we shall forgive you. This time.

Permalink Reply by Rob Orr on May 25, 2012 at 5:15am Hey David - I use a .net for my personal blog - roborr.net, and I've had it for years. I know of lots of folks using .nets. .coms are great if you can get them, but they're not nearly as important as they were a few years ago. That's not to say they're not important because they are, it's just that the proliferation of other TLDs have gained acceptance and prominence.
Permalink Reply by Dave Wright on May 25, 2012 at 10:35am Just a thought... davidcreelspeaks.com is available. Sometimes I worry that if I do a .net that is very similar in content to whatever is posted on the .com then we will be in competition for the viewers and folks that may type it in wrong will unknowingly be reading the wrong site. In reality that's probably not a common problem, but worth a thought.
Oh, and just FYi, I'm a big fan of these guys for domain registration. straight up pricing, no fluff, really easy website to do what you need to do. They also starting offering hosting but I'm a big Hostgator fan for that strictly based on customer service. Good luck!
