I've been working with a manufacturer to develop some prototypes of an idea I have to help silence a vibrating cell phone. I noticed that people (including myself) put their cell phones on something while it's on their desks all in an effort to help quiet them. So I jumped on the opportunity to make a product that helps to silence those noises.
What do you think? Do I have a business opportunity here? Thanks!

I am not sure I understand the purpose of putting your phone on vibrate but then have a device to silence those noises.
If you have more details on this, I might change my reply ;-)

The product doesn't completely silence your phone, it nullifies the vibration from your phone being transferred to the surface below.
For example, my bosses phone was on his desk and it started ringing. The vibration from his phone on his desk was louder than the ringtone playing. If he had his phone on my product, the office wouldn't have heard his phone vibrating and wouldn't have disrupted us while we were working.
I know with me and all my co-workers we like being notified of texts, calls, emails, etc, but we don't like the whole office knowing that. So with my product the sound of the vibration from the phone will still be heard, but not the noise from it vibrating on your desk.
Hope this helps :)
Permalink Reply by Danny Lint on July 20, 2012 at 7:56pm Thanks for the added detail. But for example , I have a rubberized case on my phone so there isnt that direct metal/plastic with desk contact. Why would your product be better?
Would you have to carry your product to meetings if I wanted to keep my phone on vibrate?
Why is your product better than keeping my phone on a magazine or stack of papers I already have on my desk?
I don't mean to knock your idea but I don't personally see a demand for this. I could be totally wrong as I am only one person.
Permalink Reply by Joshua Christensen on July 20, 2012 at 8:15pm The idea behind the product is more of thing you would keep on your desk as a dedicated place for your phone.
It's not a product for everyone and I do need a larger survey of people to see if this will be a viable product. I do appreciate your questions and feedback.

Permalink Reply by Brent Jamison on July 20, 2012 at 9:22pm Joshua - Is your product an app you are developing or this an actual device that connects to the phone? I could see you having more success if this was an app, honestly. I've worked in the cell phone business for close to 10 years and can honestly say no one has ever approached me with this problem.

I use a docking station for my iphone when at my desk. It both charges the phone and nullifies the vibration issue your are alluding too. It would not be a product I would use because of this.

Permalink Reply by Michael Shemwell on July 22, 2012 at 1:57pm I have a Droid. When on "silent", it will vibrate if there is a call but it just has a tiny green light that lights up when I get an email or text. I don't think your idea would be of any interest to me, or my wife (I asked her).
The large lighted case on kickstarter above is cool looking, but would be distracting if in a meeting. As would having a cell phone on a special surface laid out on the table.
The only way that I could see this selling would be if it was dirt cheap and people just bought it as a novelty. People will buy/try just about anything if it is cheap. I wouldn't, but I know lots of people that might.
