The last year I have become interested in selling organic foods to restaurants or possibly on an individual basis. Much of my working years have been in restaurants and in hotels. I relate well with the front and back of the house staff and I've some experience in sales too. There seems to be huge potential in this area but I'm just not sure how to start or how to sell my experience to some company. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I think it is an interesting idea. I'm not sure organic is the best focal point though. It could be one possible avenue, but there is a lot of local food that isn't organic, and in fact, goes way beyond organic.
Anyway, there are other categories people use like responsibly grown, heirloom varieties, selected for flavor, pasture fed, fresher, sustainably grown, fair trade, and so on.
I think most small farmers are better growers than marketers. There might be an opportunity there. Try walking around your farmers market and talking to growers.
If restaurants are demanding access to virtually unlimited quantities, that can be tough for small farmers.
Just some thoughts. Best wishes.

Luke, Thanks a lot for that idea.

It took them a long time to finally get this business of the ground but it uses a membership model.
It's a idea that's worth some thought...

Check out Grow Alabama. Much of the move now is toward locally grown foods more so than organically grown foods.
Permalink Reply by Luke Townsley on July 10, 2012 at 7:29am I have to agree about the local food over organic. I think more people want a connection with their food.
I'd like to link local farmers with local restaurants. It does seem like the chain restaurants may be a tough sell as they may have long term contracts with well known suppliers.
Permalink Reply by Dan Miller on July 16, 2012 at 5:26pm There is a local cool restaurant here in the Nashville area - Burger Up. They show a listing on the wall of all the local farms where they buy produce and meat - really awesome place - http://www.burgerupcoolsprings.com/vendors.html
Thanks. I'm enjoying your interview on wealth building.
As suggested, making a tie between the businesses and the farms sounds like a great avenue. Businesses need things that set them apart and having the customers know were there food comes from sound like a nice selling point.
K, bye
