Hello 48 days community,
I am a long time 48 days listener and reader (6+ years and going strong). I am in a "brain fog" and just can't see the next step and would like to get some fresh voices speaking into my life. I have helped many others change vocational roles and think outside the box to change their current business plan, but for the life of me (literally) I cannot seem to see things differently within my own life.
My goal is for my work to be mobile, not tied to an office space for a set 40 hours a week. My long term goal is to develop multiple stream of income (and impact to others) — SWISS currency or Vending business model.
Of course I am already going through the 48 Days book, but can’t get past the section of sending resumes to companies because I just can’t imagine who that company / client might be. I really need to make a vocational move in the next 4 months, so it definitely fits with the 48 days plan, with a bit extra time if I need to develop a list of clientele for something new.
I know this sounds so “newbie” of me, but after 3-4 weeks of trying to break through, i just can clear the fog in my own brain. I would really appreciate any thoughts, however quick or long, to help break through the “fog of self-reflection.”
Just a bit about me to give you context:
I have over 15 years of customer service, team leadership, and adult training experience. I have worked with Apple for 9 years (Apple Retail) as a trainer, both for customers and for new employees, served as a business trainer, senior technician, and spent several years within the leadership team to help run the technical and training teams of the store. Prior to Apple, I helped manage a 40+ employee company, and spent 7 years as an associate minister in two different mid-large size churches.
I am a 40 year old father of 2 small kids and really want to maximize my time with them. My wife works as a teacher, so she has 6-8 weeks a year we can spend together — but working retail means her down time is my prime time and vise versa.
I love vision and project planning — from the 30,000 foot view, which is why I have gravitated toward team leadership within large companies / organizations. That said, the details are where the execution exists.
Very tech savvy, though I would not consider myself a geek, just technically inquisitive. I like studying a computer program with the same vigor as I enjoyed learning Greek and Hebrew in Seminary, and I approach all my customer service interactions as I did pastoral / chaplaincy session. While I don't feel I should return to the pastoral role, the best "church position" for me would be Teaching Pastor who also oversees the technical ministry team.

Hi Jason - so glad you are reaching out for some insight and help clearing the fog! As I read your post I'm seeing a man who is detail oriented and desiring to pursue excellence. You enjoy both learning and teaching. And you want a way to provide for your family that is flexible and gives you time to spend with them - maybe even to make them your priority, so you need work that fits around their schedules.
I'm wondering if you have considered creating online training for a company? This comes to mind because it would allow you to work from anywhere and on your own schedule. It combines your tech savvy, your attention to detail, love of learning and enjoyment of teaching. These skills would certainly serve you well in that space. People are always looking for people who can see and work out the details to help them refine products.
Another field that comes to mind is quality control. As a high C, you probably have the ability to find errors and help solve them. Doing it from an online position would give you the freedom you are looking for.

Congrats on starting the process! After reading your post, I have a few comments/suggestions:

I've been where you are. I got into a position where I needed to make a transition but I had no idea what I wanted to do and all the options were going round and round in my head causing confusion.
Start by writing out a list of all the possible options you might have. Don't filter by what you think is possible, just free flow and write down any option that comes to mind. The longer the list at this point, the better.
Start from these ideas: 1. Stay in this job. 2. Move to a comparable job in another company, 3. Change to a different job, 4. Start a business. Expand the list with everything that comes to mind. When you think you have finished, ask - What else? Keep asking and writing down thoughts without judgement until you really do run out of ideas.
Once you have a nice long list. start writing the pros and cons for each of your options. Keep your values and what you want from your life in mind as you go through this exercise.
It sounds simple but it's a really powerful coaching exercise. When I look back now I see that my current profession cropped up pretty quickly in my long list, even though I thought I didn't know what I wanted to do. Once we use this exercise to start unlocking the power of our subconscious mind, it's amazing how we can clear out the fog.

I'm still ideating on your post. Would you mind responding to some of the questions asked by the 48 Days Community here? They asked some great ones, and I think continuing the conversation here, could be helpful. I have some other questions, but want to get your responses to the previous ones first.
I see three themes - church, technology, and training. And you want to be mobile. Some sort of an online or on site training program is the key. I'm thinking something like - "Bringing your church into the 21st century" - new strategies in church leadership, technology and social media. It could be an online program with an onsite component as well to show church staff how to use new techniques and new technologies.
Jason - did any of the advice from the group help?
