At the beginning of this year I started a business book club at work to help improve attitudes and increase idea generation within my department and beyond. It has been successful in that it gives everyone a chance to discuss ways to improve and increase productivity within our organization. Which got me thinking, could this be spun into a side business. So the question for the community is: As a small business owner would you be wiling to pay for someone to come spend 1-1.5 hrs a month with your team to lead and facilitate a discussion about great books and ideas (ie QBQ, Tribes, etc.)?
I wanted to start exploring the possibility with local companies but wanted to see the community's thoughts before I proceeded any further.
Are you looking at the back end as well? The Authors or reps of the Books If this is openly mentioned at your meetings-To promote their goods THEY Sponsor you or someone presenting the material. I guess point I would make is.."There is an APP for that" It is possible.
I don't currently have a team (I am a one-woman business), so I am always interested in ways to connect with other likeminded individuals. The idea you've shared sounds something like a Mastermind group, and I would be willing to pay to participate in a group like this if I could "attend" via Skype or Google Hangouts.
What if you produced videos that could be sold in a subscription to mastermind groups or businesses? That way you could do the work once and reap the benefits repeatedly.
I admit that when I read the subject line about monetizing a book club, I was skeptical, since a lot of the appeal of book clubs is that it gives people a chance to speak their minds instead of their wallets, but I like Brian's idea of marketing it to business owners as a more learner-centered answer to business coaching and also Adam's idea of having authors sponsor you to lead discussions of their books. I think you can monetize almost anything. Just make sure that it isn't something people can already get somewhere else free, and if it is, make sure that you can provide something that the freebies can't.
