Business Idea: Flamingo Flocking Is Great, But Have You Tried Caning?

Last December, I was listening to one of Dan's podcasts.  In this particular podcast, Dan was talking about Elf on a Shelf created by Carol Aebersold and Chanda Bell, along with Chanda’s twin sister, Christa Pitts. He talked about how these women developed a business that was focused on the holiday season.  During the podcast, I was reminded of a fundraiser that my friend, Mike Eppes, and I did for our youth ministry programs.

You might have heard of the popular fundraiser called Flamingo Flocking.  Well we twisted this to a Caning fundraiser based on the Flocking model by using plastic lawn ornament candy canes instead of the flamingos.

Donors were amazed when came outside and saw 100 large plastic candy canes in their yard.  It has been a smashing success for us.  However, one problem we found was finding massive amounts of these candy canes.

So we are developing a business that packages lawn ornament candy canes in bulk along with our strategy for Caning.  We already have a website that we will launch on August 15th, and then we plan to do a Kickstarter Campaign on September 1st.

I am interested to know if the community could share their thoughts on this business idea.  We are bootstrapping, and we see a lot of opportunity.  Could you visualize your church's youth ministry, a sports team, band, or another organization that needs to raise funds use this system to spread joy and raise funds.

Thanks and I look forward to sharing the progress!

We got an initial website up, and are now finishing up our detail to create a Kickstarter campaign.  The website is not ready to sell products, but we just got our LLC set up and moving forward.  Our website is: caneventures.com

We are about to submit our Kickstarter campaign.  Any feedback will be greatly appreciated!

KICKSTARTER DID NOT ACCEPT OUR PROJECT as it stands now.  We hope to make changes where it will be accepted, but are making preparations to promote caneventures.com in other ways.  Thanks for the input that I have received.  We really hope to see Caning spread!

Our project got accepted by Kickstarter!!  We are very excited!  Please check it out.

Thanks for the input we received via our Contact page.

Craig, I have requested that your question be added to our FAQ.

Thanks,

Hutch

We have been on Kickstarter for almost one day.  Is there any possibility that someone from 48days might prime the pump?

Hi Hutch,

What a great idea.  I think you could do a lot with this concept.  The website needs a little improvement and simplify what you offer and the benefits.  It would also be great to also transactions on your website.  Make sure to sign up for the social media profiles for YouTube, Instagram, etc. to help brand yourself and so others don't take your name.  I think you could do a lot with social engagement via Instagram, Pinterest and Flickr if people could post photos/videos of the Caning event and you could then share that via your social media accounts and website to boost exposure.

This is a very niche idea and might be more popular during Christmas...but you can still do a lot with it.  I like the creativity, fund raising aspect and that it's more "green" than TP'ing.

Let me know if you need any other ideas on the web/social side...it's what I do for my clients.

Keep up the good work!

Jeff
