Applying for a trademark

I have been researching and pondering filing for trademarks on brand names for my business idea for many, many weeks now and I need to take action. I am pretty knowledgeable ABOUT intellectual property including what the process is and why it's important, etc. My quandry is using a legal service or doing it on my own. I know that hiring an independent lawyer could cost many thousands of dollars and Legal Zoom and Trademarkia are options as is the risk of filing and monitoring on my own. Does anyone have experience in this area and have good advice to share?

I put a pretty low value on trademarking names - but when I do trademark something I always use an attorney. There are just too many variations that need to be covered to expect to do it well myself. And I'm pretty knowledgeable about the process as well. I typically pay about $1500 for a complete process.
